During powder melting and curing, it alters the local surface tension of the coating film, inducing regular “Benard cell” contractions that form the wrinkles. Additionally, formulations typically deliberately reduce or omit leveling agents while selecting specific curing agents and accelerators to control melt viscosity. This allows gelation and curing to occur before complete leveling, effectively “locking in” the texture. Typically, adjusting the type and quantity of texturing agents allows control over wrinkle size and depth.
